The DART universe is made up of Nets, Wireless Devices(WDs), Groups, and Systems.

A DART system is controlled by one Master Gateway. It may have from 1-5000 base stations. Within the system, there are “NETs”. Think of a NET as a customer, account, or any separate groups of wireless devices. All the WDs on a NET use the DART system, but only WDs on the same NET can communicate with each other.

WDs on one NET are logically, functionally, and securely separated from all other NETs. For example, if DART is used to build a large public wireless network, each customer of the DART system will be assigned his own NET ID. The Master Gateway keeps track of each WD and which NET it belongs to to ensure that devices and endpoints on a NET can only communicate with their own devices.

For smaller networks and private DART networks, all WD can be in one NET, or the system operator may choose to segment his own WDs into separate NETs. For example, a DART system operating on a college campus might put the buses being GPS tracked in one NET, and the security system in a different NET so that they can be managed and monitored by different departments.
